Walking with Nomads

A mesmerising adventure, trekking alongside the Ait Atta, Morocco’s last nomadic tribe.

We join their annual migration through the striking terrain of the Jebel Saghro, meeting muleteers, camels and nomad families along the way. This isn’t just a trek – it’s an invitation to become part of the caravan, live the life of a nomad, taking part in daily chores and accepting the chief’s decisions about when to rest, set up camp, and continue the journey.

Unlike standard tourist experiences, this journey offers a rare glimpse into a lifestyle far removed from the modern world. We will be actively involved in essential daily tasks such as loading pack animals, collecting firewood, and herding sheep and goats.

While the trek is intentionally unstructured and filled with unexpected moments, it provides an authentic and deeply enriching experience encompassing ancient traditions, captivating landscapes, and meaningful cultural interactions. Together, these elements create a truly unique adventure, providing a deep and profound connection with Morocco’s living history.

Day 1 - Marrakech

Arrive into Marrakech and transfer to our riad, located in the heart of the medina. After settling in, meet the group and enjoy a welcome dinner. Overnight Riad Pachavana or similar. (D)

Marrakech

Charming, chaotic and charismatic, Marrakech has a truly unique atmosphere. Heaving with activity, Djemaa el Fna, the central square, has been a meeting point for centuries. Packed full of traders, Berber musicians, acrobats, snake charmers, wise men, acrobats and tooth pullers, the square’s hypnotic charm will soon rub off on you. There’s no better way to experience Djemaa el Fna than to sample the local specialities on offer at the night-time food stalls. With lights flickering and smoke rising, watching the hive of activity from a café is the ideal way to capture the mystical atmosphere. Marrakech has lots more to offer with souqs bursting with Moroccan crafts, the immense Koutoubia Mosque, and countless museums, palaces, gardens and cultural sites. After a hectic day, the haven of the Marjorelle Gardens, full of cacti and vivid blue buildings, or a sunset drink in the gardens of La Mamounia Hotel, is the perfect way to unwind.

Day 2 - Nekob – Handor

Drive across the Atlas Mountains to the Draa Valley, the longest valley of palm trees in Morocco. After lunch in Nkob we continue to Handor, where we meet with local muleteers, camels, and a nomad family who we accompany on this extraordinary journey. This interaction marks the start of our immersion into the nomadic lifestyle. We spend our first night here, preparing for the trekking adventure ahead. Overnight camping. (BLD)

Draa Valley

Nestled in the heart of southern Morocco, the Draa Valley is a captivating natural paradise celebrated for its magnificent palm groves, verdant landscapes, and the winding Draa River. The Draa is the world’s largest palm grove and, at 1,100 kilometers, holds the title of Morocco’s longest river. Created by the merger of the Dades and Imini Rivers, it winds its way from the High Atlas mountains, home to Morocco’s seven tallest peaks.

Day 3 - Handor – Irissi

We begin our trek with a gradual ascent toward the Tifdassine Valley, characterised by its impressive rocky ridge. Ascending to an elevation of 1800 metres, we cross the Tin Ouayour plateau, with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. A descent through a gorge brings us to our campsite near the ruins of Irissi, surrounded by terraced landscapes adorned with almond blossoms. Overnight camping. (BLD)

Day 4 - Irissi – Ighazzoun

Today’s trek takes us down a rocky valley to the almost-deserted village of Berkou, where traces of nomadic life can still be seen. We continue through the scenic Win Telouine Valley, following a river that has carved its path through a striking rock formation. Our journey ends in the village of Ighazzoun N’Imlasen where we will camp for the night. (BLD)

Day 5 - Ighazzoun – Igli

Our route leads us into a vast natural amphitheatre surrounded by dramatic mountain formations. Crossing the Tadaout N’T’blah plateau, we enjoy stunning views of the Saghro Massif. Descending through the Afourar Valley, we arrive at the village of Igli, where we set up camp. (BLD)

Jebel Saghro

The Jebel Saghro is a striking mountain range located in southeast Morocco, with its highest elevation point reaching 2712 meters. Extending the line of the Anti-Atlas, these starkly beautiful mountains rise between the High Atlas and Dades Valley to the north, with the sub-Saharan landscape stretching out to the south. Almost entirely untouched by visitors and development, it boasts a landscape of flat-topped mesas, deep gorges, and twisted volcanic pinnacles, with date palms and almond groves adding a touch of green. During the winter months, the mountain range can be cold and blanketed in snow. In contrast, summers are extremely hot with scarce water sources, with Jebel Saghro translating as ‘dry mountain’ in Berber.

Days 6 - Igli – Almou N’Ouarg

Our journey starts with a challenging ascent along a lava flow weaving between imposing rock formations, and culminating at Kouaouch peak (2592m). From this vantage point, we are greeted with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding massif. The day ends near the Almou N’Ouarg spring. Overnight camping. (BLD)

Day 7 - Almou N’Ouarg – Tagdilt

On the final day of our trek, we ascend the Ouarg Pass and then begin a gradual descent toward the village of Tagdilt, ending our adventure with the Ait Atta. We return to Marrakech for our final night in Morocco. Overnight Riad Pachavana or similar. (BL)

Day 8 - Marrakech

Transfer to the airport for departure. (B)

Please note:

Participants must be fit and healthy to join this trip, and be able to walk for an average of five-six hours a day on varied terrain with little shade at times.

The camping will be simple and there will be no formal bathroom facilities.

We are accompanying the Ait Atta on their annual migration – this trip is not set up for tourist groups and so a great deal of flexibility is needed as well as willingness to adapt to the needs of the nomads. They will make the decisions regarding departure times, break times, and the organisation of their caravan. We will be expected to assist with a variety of chores from loading pack animals to gathering firewood, meaning we are not merely there to observe their culture and way of life, but to fully immerse ourselves and make ourselves useful each day as part of their migration. Whilst most of the terrain is only of medium difficulty, we will be walking for many hours a day, and will be expected to keep up with the pace set by the nomads, so it’s important to consider the realities of this before opting to join the trip.

What's included?

  • Airport transfers

We include arrival and departure transfers regardless of whether you book flights yourself, or we book them for you. If you’re booking them yourself, then please let us know the details so that we can arrange the transfers. Please note though that if you arrive earlier than Day 1 of the tour, and leave after the final day, we may need to make an additional charge for an airport transfer.

  • Accommodation

Accommodation as listed in the dossier. The nature of the destinations that we operate may sometimes mean that we need to change hotels, but we’ll always endeavour to keep the same standards. Please be aware that as we operate in many countries where tourism is in its infancy, hotel standards may not be the same as you’re used to elsewhere.

  • Guides

You will be accompanied by an English speaking guide.

  • Meals

As listed within the itinerary / dossier (B-Breakfast, L-Lunch, D-Dinner).

What's not included?

  • Visas

We don’t arrange visas for our travellers, but if an invitation letter is necessary then we will arrange this for you. If you need any advice with visas then just give us a call, or alternatively a visa agency can assist.

  • Airport Taxes

If there are any departure taxes to pay that are not included within the cost of your ticket, you’ll need to pay these yourself.

  • International Flights

Many of our travellers arrive from different destinations and so we don’t include international flights in the cost of our tours. If however, you would like us to book flights for you, then just give us a call and we’ll be happy to discuss your options.

  • Travel Insurance

If you need any assistance with this, then let us know – although we can’t arrange it ourselves, we can point you in the direction of a reputable provider that can assist.

Visas

Most travellers, including UK, US and EU citizens will not need a visa for Morocco.

Visa regulations can change however and so we recommend that you contact your nearest embassy for the most up to date information.

Health and vaccinations

We are not medically qualified and so we recommend that you speak to your doctor or nearest health professional for advice concerning recommended vaccinations. For more advice on vaccinations, you can also visit www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk.

If you have any physical limitations that might impact your ability to participate in the planned tour activities, it’s essential that you make us aware as soon as possible so that we can discuss this with you.

Insurance

It is a condition of joining our tours that you have suitable travel insurance in place, and we cannot accept travellers without insurance. All policies differ in terms of what they will cover, but as a minimum you need medical and health cover which will cover you for the whole time that you are away. Most policies will also include cancellation cover, which will cover you if an unforeseen circumstance obliges you to cancel your trip. We recommend that you obtain your insurance as soon as you book your trip.

Please note that government travel warnings often affect the validity of your travel insurance, and you should check this with your insurance company.

Money

The local currency here is the dirham. It is best to bring Euros for exchange purposes, but UK pounds are increasingly accepted.

You will be able to change money into dirhams on arrival in Marrakech. Your guide will be able to advise on this.

Local conditions

When travelling to some of the destinations we offer you need to bear in mind that things won’t always work here as we’re used to them working at home. Travelling in underdeveloped and untouristed destinations requires both patience and a sense of humour. There may be problems with infrastructure, attitudes may be different, and maintenance may not be as high a standard as we would always like, but this is very much part and parcel of travelling in such a place. We aim to resolve any issues as quickly as possible, and thank you for your patience.

This is particularly relevant to this trip – it travels through some remote regions, some of which are largely isolated from the outside world and have very little experience of tourism whatsoever. We will be camping for most of the time, with no real facilities, and it is essential that you bear this in mind before joining this trip.

Travel advice

We keep a very close eye on the travel advice issued by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office so that we can keep you up to date with any warnings. At the time of writing the FCO does not advise against travel to any parts of Morocco which we visit.

This relates to advice from the British government – other nationalities need to check the stance of their own governments.

Please note that the information contained above is highly susceptible to change, and while we endeavour to keep up to date we recommend that you use this as a guide only. Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
