An epic trip through the five ‘stans’ of Central Asia, visiting its remarkable old Silk Road cities and travelling to some of its most beautiful areas, to give you a comprehensive overview of this fabled land. We start in Uzbekistan, home to the region’s most incredible historic sites, spending time exploring the ancient cities of Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand, awash with turquoise tiled minarets, imposing mausoleums and spectacular old madrassahs that bear witness to the glories of past civilisations. In Turkmenistan – perhaps the most unusual of the stans – we spend a night by the flaming gas crater of Darwaza, explore the bizarre sights of Ashgabat, and step back in time at the archaeological site of Merv. Before moving on to Tajikistan we explore Termez – the Soviet Union’s southernmost city and home to unique Buddhist monuments – then spend time in the Fann Mountains with isolated villages and picture perfect scenery. Kazakhstan holds hidden delights in the form of the remarkable landscapes of the Charyn Canyon and Altyn Emel National Park, while our final country Kyrgyzstan is home to nomadic cultures, azure blue lakes and snowcapped peaks. Each country offers something different, from the glittering white marble avenues of Ashgabat to the tranquillity of the Kyrgyz mountains, and travelling through this majestic part of the world is one of the world’s great journeys.
